Merit Scholarships VES offers four merit-based honor scholarships, which are awarded to applicants who have demonstrated a record of academic achievement, a strong sense of personal integrity and leadership and the promise of continued success. The honor scholarships are based on individual merit without regard to financial need. However, if the student's financial need exceeds the amount of the scholarship, there are "need-based" grants available. Being awarded an honor scholarship will in no way influence any "need-based" decision. The Alton P. Sparkman Lynchburg Honor Scholarship Each year, two of these scholarships are awarded to new day students entering grades nine or ten. The award covers one-half of the current day student tuition and is renewable as long as the student maintains an 85 academic average and good standing with the school. All applicants must complete the regular admissions process by February 1, submit an Honor Scholarship Application (PDF) and a 500-word essay by February 15 and return to VES for an additional on-campus interview with the Scholarship board during the last week of February. Decisions are made by March 10. The Capital Area Honor Scholarship One scholarship is awarded each year to a new boarding student from North Carolina, entering grades nine or ten.
